Society for the Study of Labour History

The Society for the Study of Labour History The Society announces its Annual History Essay Prize

One prize of £350 will be awarded annually for an essay, in English, of no more than 8,000 words on either any subject within the labour history of the British Isles, or a topic in comparative labour history where a British comparator is deemed to be a major component.

Publication in Labour History Review (LHR) will be offered to a winning essay if it is deemed of publishable quality. The Editors will determine what form the publication will take, and they might decide to publish only a synopsis or an abridged version. Essays considered for publication will be subject to the usual refereeing procedures of the journal. Essays should conform to the LHR house-style, which is published in each edition.

Deadline for submission of essays for the 2005 competition is 31st July.

No prize was awarded in 2004, but we are keen to award in future.

The winner will be announced each autumn at the Society’s Annual General Meeting

Entrants will be deemed to have read and agreed to the following:

The conditions of eligibility are that entrants should not have already published a book-length academic study in any historical field. Membership of the Society is encouraged, but it is not a condition of entry or a criterion of assessment; nor is UK citizenship. The Society will appoint from its members with appropriate academic standing a panel of three judges. Membership of the panel will change from time to time.

The Society will ensure an appropriate continuity within the panel and so far as possible a balance of gender and specialist interests. Essay entries should omit the names of entrants and will be judged anonymously. The name and address of the essay prize entrant should be contained in a separate sealed envelope only bearing the title of the essay. The decision of the panel of judges will be final. Submissions: FOUR copies (by post only) to Dr Matt Perry, ADMC, University of Sunderland, Priestman Building, Green Terrace, Sunderland SR1 3PZ, no later than 31 July 2005
